Abstract
THE formation of bilirubin and its elimination from the body as a waste product of heme catabolism require a series of metabolic alterations and transport processes. Partial or complete failure at any point in this sequence can result in jaundice. This review will place particular emphasis on alterations of bilirubin metabolism and transport that are important in the pathogenesis of hyperbilirubinemia.Bilirubin SynthesisAlthough approximately 85 per cent of the bilirubin formed in the body is derived from senescent erythrocytes by conversion of the heme of hemoglobin to biliverdin and subsequent reduction to bilirubin within reticuloendothelial cells, little is known . . .Keywords
