A Clinical and Electromyographic Study of Postoperative Facial Palsy

Abstract
Twenty-six cases of postoperative facial palsy were seen during the five years from 1964 to 1968. Twenty cases occurred after ear surgery in our clinic. The incidence is 2.6%. Surgery for facial palsy was performed in 14 cases and improvement was obtained in 11 out of the 14. Electromyographic examination was done in all cases. Surgery for postoperative facial palsy is indicated in those cases in which no voluntary activity is observed at the end of the third week after operative injury. Electromyography is useful for qualitative evaluation of the muscle function.
