Salivary Histidine-Rich Proteins

Abstract
152The history of the human salivary histidine-rich proteins (HRPs) is complex, since the proteins or peptides composing this group have been identified by several investigators which led to the assignment of different names for the same component(s). Adding to the complexity is the fact that the approaches used for the electrophoretic identification and chromatographic separation of HRPs differ extensively between laboratories. In the absence of complete characterization data it is difficult at best to establish the identity or the degree of relatedness of similar components. As will be seen later, the confusion regarding the number and relationship of HRPs is becoming untangled as progress is made in isolating and characterizing each member peptide.
