Abstract
The assay in mice of botulinum toxin, Type A, was influenced by the salts and colloids in the solution used to dilute the toxin. The variation in the LD50 was as much as 50-fold. The diluent recommended as standard for assaying the toxin was 2% gelatin in 0.1% sodium phosphate buffer solution pH 6.9, sterilized by autoclaving. The number of deaths resulting from injections of the toxin in this standard diluent was reduced about 80% by subsequent administration of 5 doses of sodium phosphate solution. Keywords
