Abstract
This paper provides a general overview of the Brookhaven Energy System Optimization Model (BESOM), two of its variants, and two examples of characteristic applications. BESOM is a linear-programming model that was developed for the quantitative evaluation of energy technologies and policies within a systems framework. The model is designed to examine interfuel substitutions in the context of constraints on the availability of competing resources and technologies. BESOM provides a ''snapshot'' of the national energy system configuration, while MARKAL and TESOM provide, respectiely, a farsighted time dimension and a simulation capability for the examination of the evolution of a national energy system over a time horizon. Keywords
