Close to Home: Making Sustainability Work at the Local Level

Abstract
It is not a long way to Tipperary, Ireland, from Brussels, Belgium, the seat of the European Union—some 850 kilometers as the crow flies. Indeed, it may take crow longer these days than it does for the various European Commission policies and programs to make their way to Tipperary and leave their imprint on the local landscapes and ways of life. For the long-term sustainable development goals of the European Union to be realized, though, it is important that local communities, such as Slieveardagh (a region in east Tipperary), maintain their social vitality while adjusting to the vastly extended scale horizons of economic and ecological challenges now unfolding globally. Serious questions concerning the welfare of local communities need to be raised when discussing large-scale development and reform.
