Neonatal Prevalence of Anti-Human Immunodeficiency Virus Antibodies in California

Abstract
In a recent paper, Nicholas et al reviewed maternal seroprevalence in two eastern states and recent studies of the vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The California Department of Health Services has been interested in the question of maternal HIV infection and has been conducting a serologic survey of California newborns. In this study, heelstick specimens are blotted onto filter paper for genetic disease screening. After this legally mandated genetic disease testing is completed, the specimens are separated from identifying information and transferred to the state public health laboratory for enzyme-linked immunoassay testing of the blood spots for HIV, with confirmation of repeatedly reactive specimens by Western blot. Preliminary results from this study are now available.
