Abstract
The history of the development of PC as an analytical tool and the important advances brought about by its application in many areas of chemical research are reviewed. The present status of PC is discussed with emphasis on solvent systems; the grades and types of paper and the most important applications are also discussed. A brief survey of the literature has been summarized on the comparison of the two similar techniques which are paper- and thin-layer chromatography and advantages of each technique are pointed out. It appears from this literature survey that PC is widely used today, especially in countries outside the United States, for the separation of many organic and inorganic compounds, primarily metal ions and amino acids. The future application of PC will depend on the manufacture of short-fiber papers and those possessing gel filtration and permeation properties. Keywords
