Abstract
Low platelet MAO [monoamine oxidase] activity is apparently associated with human alcoholism. Low platelet MAO activity in alcoholic probands is associated with a high prevalence of psychiatric hospitalization in 1st-degree family members and alcoholism and suicide attempts among alcoholics. Psychiatrically ill family members of the alcoholic probands with low platelet MAO activity demonstrate low enzyme activity, while the well family members have normal enzyme activity.
