Malignant Melanoma

Abstract
A 20-year experience with 427 cases of malignant melanoma is reviewed. Of 243 cases treated for cure, the 5- and 10-year survival rates from the date of onset of the disease were 51 and 27% respectively. The 5- and 10-year survival rates for patients undergoing prophylactic node dissection were: with negative nodes, 77 and 64%, respectively and with positive nodes, 59 and 38%, respectively. The 5- and 10-year survival rates for patients undergoing therapeutic regional node dissection were 22 and 3%, respectively. Various factors which influence prognosis and treatment are discussed.
