THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE RED BLOOD CELL IN THE DOG

Abstract
Blood destruction or blood withdrawal in bile fistula dogs led to circulatory response of new red cells and Hb. After this procedure the bile pigment output fell to low values for many wks., followed by a conspicuous rise. This rise marked the obsolescene of the new red cells and determined the length of their life cycle. Under these conditions the bile pigment output averaged 83 mgm. per day; the life cycle of red blood cells approximated 124 days.
