Abstract
Brillouin-scattering measurements are reported for the hexagonal plastic crystal norbornylene. The five independent elastic constants at 296 K are determined from the observed Brillouin shifts to be C 11 = 4·01 ± 0·08, C 33 = 4·01 ± 0·08, C 12 = 3·59 ± 0·18, C 13 = 3·00 ± 0·32 and C 44 = 0·91 ± 0·03, in units of 109 N m-2. The magnitudes of three of the five independent photoelastic coefficients are also determined from Brillouin peak intensity measurements to be |p 12| = 0·31 ± 0·02, |p 13| = 0·28 ± 0·02 and |p 44| = 0·03 ± 0·005.Keywords
