Abstract
The effect of supplementation of calf starters and other concentrate mixtures with enzymes was evaluated in five studies. In the first experiment, a growth response to a mixture of five microbial enzyme concentrates led to subsequent experiments designed to identify the specific enzyme concentrate responsible for the improved growth. Modest increases in the rate of gain were observed in four experiments when bacterial protease concentrate was included. Conversely, supplementation with bacterial amylase and TakamineCellulase 4000 did not affect the rate of gain; fungal amyloglucosidase depressed the rate of growth in one experiment. The optimum level of bacterial protease concentrate supplementation appeared to be 1.1 to 1.4 mg. per pound of body weight per day. Copyright © 1963. American Society of Animal Science .
