Abstract
Hard Clad Silica optical fibers, fabricated from pure silica preforms with differing levels of OH and Cl, were exposed to continuous gamma irradiation. The low OH, high Cl containing fibers were irradiated under a variety of environmental conditions and at two testing facilities. The reproducibility of the radiation response is presented. Further the fiber type, the operating power level, the irradiation temperature and the dose rate and level were varied to help rationalize the response of these fibers. The results are given and then discussed in light of their implications on mechanisms of defect growth and recovery and for special applications such as space platform, aircraft, satellite or cold remote stations.© (1989) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
