Abstract
Pure-tone audiometric tests were administered to 498 mentally retarded subjects at The Training School, Vineland, N. J. Thirty-five per cent had normal hearing, 14% had only slight deviation, 28%, moderate losses, 6%, hard of hearing, 1%, deaf. Seventeen per cent of the population was non-testable, with a mental age below 5 years and personality disturbances and social quotients below 40. 4/5 of this group were either of organic or mongoloid etiology. The authors discussed the problems of testing a group of this type. Routine hearing examinations of all retarded children should be carried out. Keywords
