Abstract
The effects of in-gestion of moderate amts. of KC1 and NaCl on the mineral and water balances of 2 normal subjects and 2 patients with, respectively, nephrosis and advanced hemorrhagic Bright''s disease were studied. Each subject was given a constant weighed and analyzed diet for a foreperiod of 6 days and an exptl. period of 18-32 days. The metabolism data are in graphs showing: (1) the daily balances of Na, K, Mg, Ca and N, and the partition of their excretion in stool and urine; (2) the cumulative retention of Na, K and N compared to weight change; and (3) the daily urinary excretion of all acid and all basic radicles. In the normal subjects the inges-tion of KC1 did not increase the Na excretion. In the nephrosis patient the ingestion of KC1 had no appreciable effect on the Na and K retention or development of edema. The ingestion of KCI by the hemorrhagic nephritic resulted in marked retention of K, temporary retention of Na, and no increase in urinary Na. Restriction of NaCl was effective in reducing edema in both patients.
