Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 Protease Inhibitors in Clinical Practice

Abstract
THE PROGNOSIS for patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has improved substantially with the use of protease inhibitors (PIs). This improvement is evident by the resolution of previously untreatable infections1,2 and recent decreases in mortality and hospitalization rates,3,4 and it has been confirmed in controlled trials using both surrogate markers and clinical end points.5-7
