Abstract
This report summarizes three efforts performed during the past fiscal year. The first these efforts is a study of the theoretical behavior of the regional seismic phase Lg in various tectonic provinces. Synthetic seismograms are used to determine the sensitivity of Lg to source and medium properties. The primary issues addressed concern the relationship of regional Lg characteristics to the crustal attenuation properties, the comparison of the Lg in many crustal structures and the source depth dependence of Lg. The second effort described is an expansion of hte capabilities of the three-dimensional finite difference code TRES. The present capabilities are outlined with comparisons of the performance of the code on three computer systems. The last effort described is the development of an algorithm for simulation of the near-field ground motions from the 1971 San Fernando, California, earthquake. A computer code implementing this algorithm has been provided to the Mission Research Corporation foe simulation of the acoustic disturbances from such an earthquake.Keywords
