The Chemical Composition of the Cell Walls of Penicillium digitatum Sacc. and Penicillium italicum Whem.

Abstract
Purified cell walls were isolated jom hyphae of P. digitatum and P. italicum. Electron micrographs showed micro-fibrils in the walls. The walls are composed chiefly of carbohydrate material, mainly D-glucose, together with D-galactose, glucosamine and mannose. Only small amounts of protein were found. Fractiona-tion with alkali and acid indicated that the walls contain several glycans.
