Abstract
A number of drugs are known to be potentially ototoxic. Most of them should be used only when no alternative drug is available, for some of them can cause permanent damage. The drugs may affect the cochlea (hearing) or the vestibule (balance) in the inner ear. Drug synergism and poor renal function are among the factors influencing the ototoxicity of antibiotics. Use of base-line and serial audiometric-vestibular tests is recommended when potentially ototoxic drugs are used. Keywords
