Abstract
The author shows how the helical lobe compressor originated during his development of the gas turbine, as he became convinced that a general solution of the gas turbine problem could be reached by means of the constant-pressure cycle with centrifugal compressors of the multistage type. Trouble with “pumping” in the compressor led to an examination of the possibilities of a displacement type running at high peripheral speed. After examination of a modified Roots type and of a conical screw compressor, the helical lobe compressor was developed. A comparison of the three types is given and various points of design are discussed. Various methods of increasing the efficiency are considered and the paper concludes with notes on compression ratios, methods of control, and the manufacture of the rotors. Keywords
