Abstract
The authors describe a 40 Gbit/s soliton transmission experiment over 1000 km using part of the Tokyo metropolitan optical loop network. The network consists of conventional dispersion-shifted fibres. A dispersion compensation technique was used to keep the average dispersion at a small constant value and this resulted in error-free 5 ps soliton data transmission over 1000 km. The power penalty at a bit error rate of 1 × 10–10 was between 1.7 and 2.4 dB.Keywords
