Abstract
A concentration of 30 mg/1 of arginine yields approximately one-third of the maximum (wild type) growth of Schizosaccharomyces pombe arginine-requiring mutant D339 after an optimum incubation period of 3 days. Spontaneous as well as UV and nitrous acid induced arginine-requiring mutants were obtained. None of the arginine-requiring mutants maintained on agar slants were able to grow on LM media supplemented with proline, ornithine or citrulline. Some of arginine-requiring mutants when initially kept on LM media supplemented with arginine were able to grow on Leupold''s media supplemented with proline, ornithine or citrulline. The possibility of repression is discussed. The yeast strains, which in some detail resemble the arg-10 mutants of Neurospora are unable to accumulate argininosuccinic acid. There is some indication that this compound is converted and accumulated as such. The arginine-requiring mutants which resemble the arg-1 of Neurospora can be distinguished from those which resemble the arg-10 mutants of Neurospora on the basis of their ability to accumulate citrulline. This publication has 20 references indexed in Scilit:
