Abstract
We investigate the importance of the abortion issue in the state Lieutenant Governor's election in Virginia in 1989. We find that the abortion issue became increasingly important as the campaign progressed and was an important predictor of vote choice. Although most previous work on state elections hsa focused exclusively on the importance of economic conditions, we conclude that under some circumstances, other types of issues may play an important role.
