Parental Choice of Schools in an Area Containing Grant‐maintained Schools

Abstract
This survey examined four geographically isolated schools, two grant‐maintained (GM) and two local education authority (LEA) maintained. Comparison of the parents’ views of GM and LEA schools produced some surprises. Supporters of LEA schools believe they assess pupils more regularly and approve their policies on homework and uniform. Those choosing GM schools believe their children want to go there and like the kinds of pupils they expect their children to meet there. The majority base their choice on what they perceive schools to offer to children, but a minority as large as 30% was predisposed towards grant‐maintained schools.
