Psammoma Bodies in Diffuse Toxic Goiter

Abstract
The frequent association of psammoma bodies and adenocarcinoma of the thyroid gland is well known. Psammoma bodies are infrequently seen in benign thyroid conditions, and many pathologists regard their presence in the thyroid gland as strongly indicative of carcinoma. The cases of two patients with diffuse toxic goiter, in which psammoma bodies were microscopically observed, are presented. Subserial sectioning of both thyroid glands failed to disclose occult carcinoma. Despite the strong statistical association of psammoma bodies with adenocarcinoma of the thyroid gland, they are not pathognomonic of malignancy.
