Carcinoid tumors of the rectum

Abstract
Ier age in women than in men. There are no histologic criteria by which to recognize the malignant and potentially malignant tumors. The size of the tumor is closely related to its malignant potentiality; 78 per cent of those larger than 2.0 cm. were associated with metastasis while only 8.0 per cent of the smaller lesions were malignant. Tumor invasion of the muscularis propria was noted in 78 per cent of the malignant cases and in a much smaller percentage of the benign cases. The actual incidence of invasion cannot be determined from the available data. A significant number of cases coexisted with other gastro-intestinal neoplasms and with peptic ulcers. Abdominoperineal resection is the treatment recommended for carcinoids larger than 2.0 cm. in diameter, while smaller lesions can be adequately treated in most cases by local excision. © The ASCRS 1962...
