Abstract
It has gradually become apparent that Berg''s Classification of Fishes has a number of disadvantages making it more of a mixed blessing than an unqualified boon to ichthyology. One of the most serious defects, to which attention has not been called, is the utilization of a number of generic names which represent variations or "improvements" over the spellings as published by the original authors. All of the generic misspellings which I have found in the first edition of Berg''s work (1940) have remained uncorrected in the 1955 edition and, most regrettably, many of these are being perpetuated in other, more recent, classifications as well as checklists and faunal works. The nomenclature of the following genera is discussed: Acanthoessus Agassiz, Aplochiton Jenyns, Aplodactylus Valenciennes, Hemiramphus Cuvier, Hiodon Lesueur, Istiophorus Lacepede, Kyphosus Lacepede, Leiognathus Lacepede, Lepidotes Agassiz, Lepisosteus Lacepede, Lophotus Giorna, Lutjanus Bloch, Mochokus Joannis, Noemacheilus Hasselt, Ogcocephalus Fischer, Ophicephalus Bloch, Ophichthus Ahl, Opistognathus Cuvier, Oplegnathus Richardson, Stylephorus Shaw, Synanceja Bloch and Schneider, Synbranchus Bloch, and Tetraodon Linnaeus.
