Psychologic Correlations with the Electroencephalogram

Abstract
The initial purpose of the study was to determine if changes were brought about in a patient''s pattern of brain-wave activity as a result of a successful psychoanalytic treatment. In all, 133 patients were studied. Results indicated that there were no appreciable changes in the EEG''s of the patients either during or in the period immediately following psychoanalysis. A definite correlation did appear, however, between certain personality constellations and EEG pattern. Markedly passive individuals invariably had regular EEG''s with very high alpha indices. Women with strong masculine trends also had regular EEG records but with a low alpha index and much fast activity. A strong masculine drive was also apparent in the very few low-alpha men studied. A mixed or mixed-fast type of EEG was found to be associated with a frustrated, impatient, aggressive, hostile personality. In the patient group, there was a preponderance of men with regular EEG''s and high alpha indices; there was a preponderance of women with mixed types of EEG.
