A Contractual Model for the Department of Nursing

Abstract
The author proposes a system for delivery of nursing care in which professional nurses can use their full potential, achieve the status of a professional, and be accountable to themselves and the patient for the care they deliver. Such change can be accomplished through the establishment of a Nursing Staff Organization. Steps for establishing such an organization are outlined and alternatives reviewed. The author concludes by raising some potential problems as cases for continued research.
