Abstract
Research in two of the first grant- maintained schools during the first term in their new status helps the author, who is at the Open University, explore topical questions. What factors motivated opting out? What is the role of governing bodies in policy making and management? Will the schools offer 'backdoor' selection? Is their funding too favourable? Is opting out the path to freedom from local bureaucracy or an educational dead end? Keywords
