Abstract
With the set of two constitutive equations in a form suggested by Dzyaloshinskii, as the basis, a phenomenological theory is proposed to explain the birefringence, natural optical activity, Faraday (or gyrotropic) rotation and the gyrotropic birefringence in crystals. Keywords
