Abstract
The free Ca 2+ concentration in the cytoplasm, [Ca 2+ ], is controlled by the uptake and release of the cation across the three major membrane systems which bound the cytoplasm — the plasma membrane, the inner mitochondrial membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum. Each membrane possesses distinctive transport mechanisms which act in concert to regulate and modulate intra-cellular Ca 2+ .
