Abstract
Historic milestones in the story of the pits of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma (NBCC) syndrome include the observations and contributions of Pollitzer, Calnan, and Bettley, and Ward. Placing the pits as a stigma of the NBCC syndrome was sparked by the demonstration of jaw cysts and skeletal defects of development in Ward's patients, who in addition had multiple basal cell carcinomas and pits in the hands and feet. Subsequent studies of families or groups of individuals or both with this syndrome documented the pits as a sign of significant importance. Keywords
