CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBSTOICHIOMETRIC URANIA (UO$sub 2$-x) AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES

Abstract
Metaliographic examination of UO/sub 2/ heated to 2000 deg C in H/sub 2/ or He and then cooled to room temperature showed two phases, UO/sub 2/ and free U. Experiments were made at 2200 to 2600 deg C to correlate the volatility of UO/ sub 2/ with the degree of oxygen deficiency. The results showed that the final composition at 2400 deg C was UO/sub 1.88/ in H/sub 2/, and U/sup 1.94/ in He and tha t the mechanism of substoichiometry is by volatilization of uranium oxides. Indirect evidence is presented for the nonexistence of free U metal at 2400 deg C. (D.L.C.)
