A Fundamental Study on the Ion-Exchange Separation of Isotope

Abstract
It is observed that heavy water is uptaken by differently cross-linked sulfonated cation-exchangers slightly easier than light water. The selectivity coefficient, K2324 (Na), between 23Na and radioactive 24Na on the resins, is determined in ethanol-water mixtures containing NaCl. The values of K2324 (Na) lie between 0.891.07. The relationship between an empirical equation, ln K2324 (Na)=a (1/D-1/D) + ln K which is derived from the experimental data, and the thermodynamical equation ln KBA=ln γA'/γB'-ln γA'/γB'+ { (HA + HB) - (HA - HB) } ln aW' + π (VA' - VB') / RT is discussed to explain the variation of the values of the K2324 (Na) and to find the better conditions for the isotope separation.
