Abstract
A microscopic theory of the reflection, transmission, and absorption of S‐polarized light by a slab dielectric consisting of N planes of molecules is developed. The interactions between molecules are assumed to be of the point dipole type. The change in the internal and exciting electric fields in the surface planes is included since a rigorous solution of Maxwell's equations is obtained. The results of the macroscopic theory of Kliewer and Fuchs are recovered in the limit that dipole interactions between crystal planes are negligible compared to interactions within a plane. Calculations exploring the effects of spatial dispersion and slab thickness on the power spectra are described. Keywords
