Prediction of posttreatment effectiveness in Navy alcoholics.

Abstract
Biographical information and naval personnel data on 2195 enlisted men admitted to USA Navy alcoholism treatment facilities from Jan. 1972 through early 1975 were analyzed for factors associated with posttreatment effectiveness (defined as 6 or more mo. of active duty following treatment). In men 26 yr old and over, considered representative of career enlistees, abstinence from drinking during treatment, years of service and level of pay were the best predicators of effective rehabilitation. For younger alcoholics, level of pay, not being demoted and not missing promotion to petty officer status were the major predictors. Findings concerning younger alcoholics, whose posttreatment effectiveness rate is 61 vs. 81% for older alcoholics, may be used as a screening tool for referral to treatment.
