Abstract
A method is described for the isolation aOO measurement of dopamine in plasma. Only nanogram quantities of dopamine were detected in plasma of patients during levodopa treatment for Parkinson's disease or of dogs given single oral doses of levodopa. Concentrations of conjugated dopamine in these plasma samples, determined by isolation and measurement of the dopamine produced after enzymatic hydrolysis of the conjugate, always greatly exceeded those of free dopamine. In contrast to most of the metabolites of levodopa, conjugated dopamine appeared to accumulate in plasma during levodopa treatment of patients. There was evidence of occasional occurrence of small amounts of conjugated 3‐0‐methyldopa in plasma of patients during levodopa treatment. Keywords
