Pediatric Gunshot Wounds

Abstract
This study, and a review of the literature, lead to the following conclusions: 1) Both the incidence and prevalence of pediatric gunshot wounds are increasing in the United States. 2) In children under the age of 10 years the most likely causes of gunshot wounds are child neglect and intrafamilial conflicts; in those over the age of 10 years the causes are interpersonal violence (including gangs) and accidental injury related to the availability of handguns. 3) The mortality and morbidity rates of pediatric gunshot wound patients can be similar to those of adults when treated at a Level 1 trauma center. 4) Further research is needed in all areas of this topic.
