Effect of Crude Drugs on Rat Serum Constituents after the Administration. II.

Abstract
The effects of crude extracts from 15 varieties of crude drugs were investigated on blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and total cholesterol (T. Chol.) concentrations in rat serum at 8 h after i.p. administration. The administration of Rheum rhizome, Coptidium rhizome, Ephedra herbs, Paeonia root and Bupleurum root decreased BUN and increased T. Chol. Administration of Asiasarum root and Cinnamomum branch increased T. Chol. only. The most effective doses of Rheum rhizome, Coptidium rhizome, Ephedra herbs and Paeonia root were 5, 5, 5 and 25 mg/rat on BUN and 5, 5, 2.5 and 25 mg/rat on T. Chol., respectively. In rats treated with 5 mg Rheum rhizome, 5 mg Coptidium rhizome or 25 mg Paeonia root, BUN was maximally decreased at 6 h and T. Chol. was maximally increased at 8 h. In rats given 5 mg Scutellaria root or 25 mg Glycyrrhiza root, BUN was maximally decreased at 4 h and T. Chol. was maximally increased at 6 h, although BUN and T. Chol concentrations were not affected at 8 h after the 5 mg Scutellaria root or 5 mg Glycyrrhiza root.
