Abstract
Torridonian regional flow-directions are indicated unequivocally by sediment geometries and palaeocurrent structures. In the Wealden more reliance has to be placed on textural and compositional gradients. Flow directions in both guide the search for sourcemassif ‘stumps’: uncovered, covered or inferred. ‘Putting back’ the detritus on to the stumps leads to broad palaeogeographies; but erosional histories, recycling, basin budgets and changes in basinal configuration are major uncertainties. Diagenetic interference with the evidence is minimal. Overlapping opposing flows are consistent with extensional tectonic regimes.
