Abstract
Random faecal alpha-1-antitrypsin (FA-l-AT) was used as a marker of endogenous protein loss in 113 children with acute diarrhoea. Significant protein loss occurred in 39 per cent of all cases. Protein loss was highest in patients with bacterial pathogens and patients with parasitic infestations and diarrhoea. Endogenous protein loss during acute diarrhoea may contribute to the development of malnutrition and early nutritional rehabilitation in the management of diarrhoea is emphasized. Keywords
