Abstract
The phase equilibrium diagram for the system was constructed from quench and DTA data. Approximately is soluble in at 950°C, but less than 1 mole % is soluble in at 900°C. Three intermediate solid solution series A, B, and C have compositional limits of stability from 2 to 7, 20 to 37, and 56 to 80 mole % , respectively. The A solid solution series has a maximum temperature limit of stability of 910°C and the “gamma” structure. The cathodoluminescence of the five significant solid solution regions was systematically investigated using molar substitutions of divalent manganese as an activator. Spectral distribution curves are shown for each solid solution series. Previous work by Smith and Power on this system is discussed in view of the new phase equilibria and cathodoluminescence data.
