Estimation of the polarizability of gaseous ions by ion trap mass measurements

Abstract
Significant mass displacements from the expected instrumental value have been observed in ion‐trap experiments on several ionic species. This phenomenon has been extensively investigated and interpreted as the result of an interaction between the analyte and the radio‐frequency field present within the ion trap. Depending on the chemico‐physical characteristics of the analytes, deformation of the electron shell and forced alignment of the permanent dipoles may be induced. These two effects can be separated allowing an estimation of the polarizability related to the permanent dipoles for gaseous ions.
