Plasma Aldosterone during Lithium Treatment

Abstract
Plasma aldosterone and serum and urine electrolytes were determined in 9 manic-depressive patients before and at several intervals during 3 mo. of Li treatment. The same determinations were carried out in 27 manic-depressive patients who had been treated with Li for 3 mo. to 20 yr and in a control group. There was no change in plasma aldosterone during the longitudinal study and no difference between patients and controls in the transversal study. The latter study revealed a positive correlation between serum Li and plasma aldosterone. The study indicates that nontoxic Li doses may produce slight Na+ depletion in patients.
