Teenage Parenthood: Factors that Lessen Economic Dependence

Abstract
The literature reveals that teenage mothers have high rates of welfare dependence. Factors that lessen the longterm negative economic consequences of early motherhood include (1) deferment of marriage, (2) support from the family of origin, (3) increased education and career motivation, (4) decreased fertility, and (5) comprehensive programs for teenage mothers.
