Abstract
Oxygen consumptions of Wistar and Sprague-Dawley strain albino rats following the intraperit. injn. of ergotoxine ethanesulfonate were investigated. Hypothermic responses to ergotoxine of young rats were associated with decreased O2 consumptions in Wistar strain animals but this correlation was not observed in Sprague-Dawley rats. The decreased O2 consumption in the former strain represents a metabolic reaction that could have occurred through the operation of van''t Hoff''s Law. Hyperthermic responses in regulating rats were accompanied by increased O2 consumption which was approx. 2.5 times that which might be anticipated from the independent operation of van''t Hoff''s Law; this is considered as strong evidence for direct stimulation of metabolism through the action of ergotoxine on the hypothalamus. Keywords
