Abstract
A penicillinase from K. aerogenes resistant to ampicillin.was characterized, and some of its physical and chemical properties are described. The enzyme differs qualitatively and quantitatively from Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and B. licheni-formis penicillinases particularly with regard to behavior towards 6-aminopenicillanic-acid. The enzyme is not inducible. A differential permeability barrier exists in whole cells against penicillins. The possible effects on antibacterial potency together with the part played by penicillinase in the production of resistance to ampicillin are discussed.
