Abstract
A new symmetry-based phenomenological model for the modulated structures in the dielectric family is constructed. The model contains a novel competing-interaction mechanism which gives a rich phase diagram. Furthermore, the model gives a universal prediction for both the space groups and the modulation wave vectors for the sequences of phase transitions observed experimentally in the entire family.
